terramycin for petsTerramycin ophthalmic ointment /oxytetracycline hydrochloride, polymyxin B sulfate) contains a broad spectrum anti-biotic making it useful in dealing with a wide range of microbial eye infections.  In general side effects are extremely rare.  However if your pet appears irritated by the product it is best to stop using it immediately and seek professional guidance from your vet.

Terramycin is approved for use in cats, dogs and horses and is an over the counter medicine (except in California where a veterinary prescription is required.  As with any antibiotic prolonged use is not ideal.  If your pet does not show signs of improvement quickly you may wish to discuss with your vet if a different cause of the infection is likely.  Prolonged use of any antibiotic can lead to immunity building up within the bacteria that could lead to more serious eye infections in the future.

How to Use Terramycin Ointment

Terramycin ointment is supplied in a sterile tube.  The most important thing to know is that the end of the tube must be kept sterile or you could pass more bacteria into the animals eye.  Use is usually between 2 and 4 times each day.  A thin layer of the ointment should be applied to the inside of the lower eyelid.  If you are using any other medications you will need to wait ten minutes after applying this to the eye.

To prevent the risk of passing additional infection you should wash your hands thoroughly before using and ensure the cap is always secured properly.  Be sure to read the label and do not get any of the eye ointment onto your hands or face as it may cause blurry vision.
