Cheap Heartworm Pills

As more pet owners heed the advice of veterinarians and the American Heartworm Society, and use heartworm preventatives regularly, the search for low cost products grows.

The good thing about how regulated heartworm preventatives are, is that when deciding which to use, you do not need to worry that a particular brand is better or worse than another. Every medication labelled as a heartworm medicine is guaranteed to prevent heartworm disease providing you use it correctly.

Why Some Heartworm Pills Are More Expensive Than Others

You might wonder then, why the price can vary so wildly between different types of heartworm pills. There are two key reasons for this:

  1. Whilst all heartworm tablets prevent heartworm disease, some will also target other parasites too. You may feel it is cost effective to treat for roundworms and hookworms every month whilst you treat for heart-worms. Or you may believe you don’t need to worry about intestinal parasites so regularly, in which case you can buy a simple heartworm preventative to use each month, and opt for a supplementary dog de-wormer such as Panacur C, or canine tapeworm tablets on a more occasional basis.
  2. Generally the more expensive pills are those developed and marketed under a brand name. Heartgard for example was the first monthly ivermectin based heartworm preventative. As the first in its field, the makers were allowed a period of monopoly where no other ivermectin based tablets could be sold as monthly heartworm pills. This allows the developers to recoup their costs in creating the product initially. Now though, other manufacturers are allowed to develop their own versions. You will see names such as Nuheart and Valuheart use the same quantity and quality of ivermectin to prevent the disease. These are generic pills, and as such could be developed far more cheaply (Heartgard had already done all the hard work), and are sold at a much more reasonable price.

Which Heartworm Pill Should I Use?

It depends on just how much money you wish to save, and whether other parasites are a concern. Heartgard Plus is fast becoming the most popular medication on the market. It is highly palatable (coming as a chewable treat) and deals with roundworms and hookworms. There is now a cheaper generic version available in chewable form which some dog owners are switching to in order to save some money.

If you want something that does not include beef you will need to avoid Heartgard. Choose Valuheart for a traditional tablet, or Nuheart which is soluble and so easier for fussy eaters.

To incorporate flea control into your monthly heartworm prevention Sentinel Flavor Tabs might be a good choice. They will not kill existing adult fleas, but do prevent eggs and larvae hatching, so over a few months usual cure any flea problem.

  • Valuheart Heartworm Pills Blue (Dogs up to 22 lbs)
  • Valuheart Heartworm Pills Green (Dogs 23 to 44 lbs)
  • Valuheart Heartworm Pills Brown (Dogs 45 to 88  lbs)

The thing that makes Valuheart pills such a popular form of heartworm medicine is simply the price.  Valuheart is without a doubt extremely good value for money.

Generic pet medicines are a simple way to save money without scrimping on quality.  The FDA govern generics just as they do branded medications.  Once a manufacturer of a new pet medication has done all the testing necessary to register a new treatment they are allowed a monopoly period of twenty years in which to recoup the costs of developing that new product.  Once this patent period has ended other companies can use the active ingredients to develop their own generic version.  These again have to go through testing and so forth before being allowed to be sold to the public.  The key thing the FDA look for is that the generic pet medicine must be interchangeable with the original branded version.  So you could use Heartgard one month and Valuheart the next and it would make absolutely no difference to the quality of heartworm protection given to your dog.

Without the original development costs the price of Valuheart and other generic pet meds is usually far cheaper than that of the original branded version.

Valuheart Heartworm Tabs

Valuheart Heartworm Tabs contain one active ingredient (ivermectin).  It is this component that is able to destroy any heartworm larvae in the system of your dog.  By using Valuheart pills every 30 days you destroy any larvae whilst they are still under a month old and therefore before they are able to cause any concern to your pet’s health.  This is why it is crucial to use the heartworm pills every month year round.  In some areas only seasonal use is possible, throughout the mosquito season and for two months after it.  But if seasonal use is preferred you will need to visit your vet to have a heartworm test performed each spring.

Likewise if your dog has never been given a heartworm prentative before this test will need to be performed.  This is because other medications would need to be prescribed prior to starting a program of prevention.

Heartgard Plus Chewables

Heartgard Plus for Dogs – Medication Details

Heartgard Plus for Dogs is a monthly oral treatment for the prevention of heartworm disease and the control of intestinal parasites in canines.  Supplied in a tasty chewable form many pet owners find them easier to administer than conventional tablet style pills.  When used correctly all heartworm larvae that infect your pet are quickly destroyed, thus preventing any adult heartworms developing (it is the adults that bring on heartworm disease in canines).

Two active ingredients are used in this particular heartworm medication.   The first is ivermectin which is widely used by vets to destroy heartworm parasites.  In the case of preventative Heartgard the volume of ivermectin is extremely small so it works safely to destroy immature heartworm larvae.  Ivermectin travels through the cirulatory system destroying any heartworm larvae present.  The second ingredient is pyrantel which is absorbed into the gut where it deals with hookworms and roundworms.

Heartgard Plus Chewables are a beefy treat for dogs, meaning they are generally well received by our pets.  However as they do contain real beef any dogs with a beef allergy will need to be treated with another form of heartworm preventative such as Generic Heartgard Plus Tablets.  For the best uptake of the active ingredients in this particular pet medicine it is advised that dogs do actually chew, rather than swallow the treatment whole.  If your dog is one of those more apt to swallow their treat in one go, be sure to break it up for them and feed them a little at a time.

Discount Heartgard Plus Chewables

As heartworm medicine is best used year round it makes sense to find the lowest priced, reliable sources of your preferred method of treatment.  The prices we found for Heartgard Plus Chewables are extremely low, offering massive savings when compared with the RRP usually charged by vets and local pet med supply stores.   Another reason we have suggested the particular pet med pharmacy that we have, is because being based in Canada they not only offer low prices, but also provide Heartgard Plus without Prescription*.

This means you simply place your order and wait for your dog’s heartworm medicine to arrive.  There is no need to visit your vet for a prescription and then post, fax or email it to the online pharmacy.

Heartgard Plus for Dogs – Important Information

Heartgard Plus Chewables are produced by Merial and have been rigorously tested on all breeds of dog.  They are proven to be safe and effective for dogs of all types and ages, including pregnant or nursing bitches, and puppies from six weeks of age.  They key to safe use of the product is using the correct dose for your dog, and using it regularly.

Generic Heartgard Plus Blue for Small Dogs Under 25lbs

Generic Heartgard Plus Green for Medium Dogs 26 to 50lbs

Generic Heartgard Plus Brown for Large Dog 51 to 100lbs

To totally guarantee the prevention of heartworm disease it is recommended that monthly heartworm pills such as these be used year round.  In some areas with lower mosquito populations it may be possible to use the product just during the mosquito season, and for a month subsequent to that.  It is best to speak to your vet first if you are considering only seasonal use of heartworm preventative treatments to check how common the problem is in your area.

Before beginning to use any form of monthly heartworm pill your dog should take a heartworm test to ensure they are not already infected with the disease.  Once a program of monthly heartworm treatments is begun it is fine to change to a different monthly medication providing the new product is administered 30 days after the last of the old medication was used.

Heartgard Plus Chewables have been found to be safe to use with a whole host of other pet medications, but it is wise to let your vet know all treatments you give before they prescribe any new products.  The one thing you must remember is that no other form of heartworm medicine should be used alongside Heartgard Plus for Dogs.
