Comfortis and Prescriptions

comfortis canineComfortis is currently one of very few flea control treatments for which American consumers need a prescription to purchase. That’s primarily because this is a newer product and as such the FDA want to keep a close eye on its use. Don’t let that be a concern though, as you can still benefit from great prices buying Comfortis online. Just provide your vet’s contact details as you place your order. The store will then sort out the RX so you don’t have to bother with the paperwork yourself.

Comfortis Flea Control

Oral flea control is growing in popularity amongst those pet owners wishing to avoid residues on the skin of their pet left by topical treatments. Several are now available, but Comfortis is the only flea tablet that will continue destroying adult fleas all month long. It works really quickly too, fleas start be destroyed within 30 minutes, and within 4 hours all adult fleas will be gone!

There is only one active ingredient (spinosad) which is derived from a microbe that occurs naturally in soil. This acts on the flea’s nervous system, making it hyperactive, which causes it to quickly die.

Any new fleas that come into contact with your pet in the month following treatment will be killed in the same way as the initial existing fleas did when the treatment was first given. This means all adult fleas are killed before they have time to lay eggs, so over the course of a few months you will see fewer and fewer new fleas as the eggs, larvae and pupae currently existing in and around your home, mature and are subsequently destroyed. With no new eggs being laid there will be no future flea problems for your pets.

Comfortis for Dogs

Comfortis is a canine only medication, please do not use it on cats! The flea treatment is supplied as a tasty chewable tablet that contains a pork derived beef flavor so most dogs will be happy to take their medication each month.

You will need to buy the correct dose sized based on the weight of the dog to be treated. Please note that dogs must be at least 14 weeks old and 5 lbs in weight of they are to be safely given Comfortis flea tablets.

The pack sizes are:

  • Comfortis Pink for very small dogs from 5-10lbs
  • Comfortis Orange for small dogs 10.1-20lbs
  • Comfortis Green for medium dogs 20.1-40lbs
  • Comfortis Blue for large dogs 40.1-60lbs
  • Comfortis Brown for very large dogs from 60.1-120lbs

It is important you use the correct Comfortis chewable for the size of your dog. If you think you have given too much medicine be sure to speak to your vet.

Comfortis Side Effects

Most dogs will respond well to Comfortis, but just like all flea treatments there is always the potential for some dogs to display side effects. Most common with this particular flea medicine are mild bouts of vomiting. More rare issues include  itching, decreased activity, diarrhea, inflammation of the skin, redness of the skin, decreased appetite and redness of the ear. None of the effects are seen as more than mild reactions. Do read the label though, and be sure to discuss any concerns with your vet.

We recommend US Pets for K9 Advantix, as they offer great deals on a range of flea control products.

K9 Advantix II Flea & Tick Control

k9 advantix iiDealing with fleas and ticks is paramount for most pet owners, but there are more external pests that can be troublesome (or even downright dangerous in certain cases).  Advantix tackles the widest range of external parasites, of any leading spot on flea treatment.

Fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, biting flies and lice are all controlled using Advantix II.  And, whilst other flea control products deal with those pests in direct contact with our pets, Advantix II repels them too, so fewer ever come into contact with your dog.

Advantix II v Frontline Plus

You can see from the illustration below how much more K9 Advantix II will do for your pet dog:

Advantix II v Frontline PlusWhether you need all this extra protection, will depend on where you live.  For many pet owners a more simple formula such as Frontline Plus for dogs will be more than adequate.

Like Frontline Plus, Advantix II does not simply kill the biting adult fleas that cause most of the concern.  Immature fleas are also targeted, using an insect development inhibitor which ensures juvenile fleas do not develop into the adults which breed and bite.

But if mosquitoes and biting flies are problematic in your region, or if they are known to harbour diseases such as Leishmaniasis.  Of course even if such insect borne diseases are unknown where you are, the presence of biting flies can be both stressful and problematic, since pain and infection are not uncommon when bitten regularly by these annoying parasites.

The ability of Advantix II to prevent flying insects from biting is high.  However, you should not consider its use as a protection against the heartworm parasite (passed from mosquitoes), since you can never ensure 100% of mosquito bites will be prevented.  An additional heartworm medicine such as Heartgard Plus should be part of your monthly parasite control regime.

K9 Advantix v Advantix II

As a previous user of K9 Advantix you may be wondering how Advantix II differs.  Well, it is simply the addition of the insect growth inhibitor that now prevents any flea eggs, larvae or pupae from being able to develop any further.  Since these juvenile insects will now die before they are able to become the adult fleas which bite and breed, you will bring future potential flea outbreaks under control, as well as dealing with the current problem.

Bayer are no longer marketing original Advantix in the US.  There will of course be a period of time when stocks of the original formula remain in circulation, but slowly it will become impossible to buy, as stores new stocks are replenished with new K9 Advantix II.

Generic Frontline Plus

If you would like to save even more money on your pets flea treatments, generics might be the answer.  We now have two versions of generic Frontline Plus available to buy online:

Fiproguard Plus

Produced by Sergeant’s Pet Care Products, Fiproguard Plus was released in May 2011.  For the best prices we suggest amazon who are now stocking a wide range of flea control products at extremely low prices.

Pronyl Plus

Pronyl Plus Generic Frontline PlusRather confusingly, our second generic Frontline Plus product is also produced by Sergeant’s.  This time it is called Pronyl Plus.  And, you can check out the even better prices on this one here.

Pronyl Plus was released a little later than Fiproguard Plus, and both are pretty much interchangeable.

Fiproguard Plus v Pronyl Plus v Frontline Plus?

Fiproguard Plus Generic Frontline PlusThe big question then is which product do you buy?  Well, to be perfectly honest, as far as your pet is concerned it makes no difference at all.  Both generic Frontline Plus products, and the original have the same volume and quality of the key active ingredients.  So the results of using any one of them will be the same.

The reasoning behind the somewhat confusing decision to produce not one, but two generic flea treatments, is that they are targetting a slightly different audience, being sold in different types of stores.

You will usually see Fiproguard Plus in specialist pet supply stores whereas Pronyl Plus will be a more mass market product stocked in large grocery stores, drug stores and multi site retailers.  Perhaps this is why, for their launch we are seeing Pronyl Plus being offered at special offer prices around 40% less than the Fiproguard Plus!

Whilst discounts are being offered we strongly suggest choosing the generic Frontline Plus products.  After all they offer the same protection against biting insects, yet are surprisingly light on your pocket.  In the past we have been wary of generic Frontline Plus products since they simply haven’t offered a significant saving over the branded original.  But it now looks like Seargant’s are trying very hard to create a generic version of Frontline Plus that offers enough of a cost saving to make it an attractive purchase.

Generic Frontline Plus (both Fiproguard Plus and Pronyl Plus) are available in various pack sizes, for cats and dogs.  Be sure to order the product designed for the type and weight of animal to be treated.  You can find out more about how to use this topical flea treatment, and what it actually does at our Frontline Plus page.
