Using Canine Glyco-Flex Chews

glyco-flex canineIt is always difficult to know just how effective some treatments are for joint problems in dogs.  Without them telling us, we have to watch closely to determine the causes of problems and the improvement caused by supplements.  Your vet will be in the best position to guage how suitable such products as Glyco-Flex of Phycox Soft Chews are likely to be.

As with many similar products it is usual to give a higher dosage initially for between four to six weeks.  Then when signs of stiffness are alleviated a lower maintenance dose is possible.   The number of chews given depends on the weight of your dog.  When more than one chew is required each day it is more effective to split the dosage in half, giving part in the morning, and then another in the evening.

The initial daily dosage is as follows:

  • Dogs up to 30 lbs – 1 chew
  • Dogs from 31 to 60 lbs – 2 chews
  • Dogs from 61 to 100 lbs – 4 chews
  • Dogs over 100 lbs – 5 chews

The maintance daily dose is:

  • Dogs up to 30 lbs – 1 chew every other day
  • Dogs from 31 to 60 lbs – 1 chew
  • Dogs from 61 to 100 lbs – 2 chews
  • Dogs over 100 lbs – 3 chews

The chews are chicken liver flavor so should be seen as a real treat by most dogs and not be difficult to ensure they take.

Glyco-Flex Canine – 3 Stage System

As a general guide Glyco-Flex I is the weakest formula, and III is the strongest.  You should get advice from your vet about which is the right formulation for your pet’s particular needs.

Stage I is indicated for puppies and dogs with an early need for some basic form of skeletal support.  This is most likely to be the case for those breeds that we know are likely to develop conditions such as hip dysplasia or osteoarthritis as they age.  The active ingredients included in each Glyco-flex I chew are:

  • Perna Canaliculus (GlycOmega brand Green Lipped Mussel)  - 300 mg
  • Glucosamine HCI (Shrimp and Crab)  - 250 mg
  • N,N-Dimethylglycine HCl (DMG)  - 50 mg

Stage II is indicated for dogs with a more moderate need for joint support.  These may be working or sporting animals, breeds with a predisposition for joint problems and following orthopedic surgery.  The active ingredients in each Glyco-flex II chew are:

  • Glucosamine HCI (Shrimp and Crab)  - 375 mg
  • Perna Canaliculus (GlycOmega brand Green Lipped Mussel)  - 300 mg
  • Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)  - 250 mg
  • N,N-Dimethylglycine HCl (DMG)  - 50 mg
  • Manganese  (as Mn Proteinate) –   5 mg

Stage III is used more usually in elderly or working dogs with a more pressing need for joint support due to injury, osteoarthritis or following orthopedic surgery.  The active ingredients in each Glyco-flex III soft chew are as follows:

  • Glucosamine HCI (Shrimp and Crab)  - 500 mg
  • Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)  - 500 mg
  • Perna Canaliculus (GlycOmega brand Green Lipped Mussel)  - 300 mg
  • N,N-Dimethylglycine HCl (DMG)  - 50 mg
  • Manganese  (as Mn Proteinate) –   5 mg
  • dl-alpha Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E) – 25 IU
  • Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) – 12 mg
  • Grape Seed Extract  - 2.5 mg
  • L-Glutathione  1 mg
  • Selenium (as Sodium Selenite)  0.001 mg

Canine Glyco-Flex to Support Joint Health

The range of amino acids, fatty acids, glucosamine, vitamins and minerals have been developed by Vetri-Science to help improve overall joint health.  The building blocks of cartilage itself are included, along with essential minerals to help promote connective tissue growth.  Minerals to promote strong bones and increase the enzyme production that actually helps joints thrive are all believed to be beneficial in improving mobility and reducing stiffness in the joints.

Glyco-Flex Range

The Glyco-Flex range includes the three stage system using either tablets and chews for dogs, a two stage system using either chewable tablets or bite sized chews for cats and a two stage system using powder or pellets for horses.  Glyco-Flex soft chews for dogs are the most popular product in the range as they can ward off joint problems in canines we suspect will suffer problems in the future.

Whilst most of us know that in theory regular brushing of our pets teeth would be a great idea, few of us manage the task.  That’s why so many pet owners choose oral hygiene chews that help remove plaque and tartar in a way that is pleasant for both pet and owner.

Greenies Chews

GreeniesGreenies come in various sizes dependant on the size of animal to be treated.  It is important to buy the correct pack to allow your dog or cat to enjoy their treat safely and effectively.

Each chew is fairly low in calories, and only one per day is needed to keep oral health at its best.  But like any additional tit-bit being given you should of course adjust the food intake to make room for these extra treats.  Obesity in pets is a growing concern and one that is totally down to us, the owners to guard against if we want our pets to remain happy and healthy for the longest time possible.

Greenies for Dogs

Like CET Enzymotic dental chews, Greenies are chewy treats that use the action of chewing and natural abrasion to remove plaque and tartar from your pets teeth.  Unlike CET chews they do not have an additional enzyme formula to help deal with bacteria and reduce future plaque build up though.  But they do contain additional minerals and vitamins useful for all round good health and they are cheaper to buy.

The list of ingredients in canine Greenies is pretty long;

Gelatin, Wheat Protein Isolate, Glycerin, Soy Protein Isolate, Sodium Caseinate, Natural Poultry Flavor, Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate, Vegetable Oil (Preserved with Propyl Gallate), Sodium Tripolyphosphate, Lecithin, Ground Flaxseed, Calcium Carbonate, Magnesium Monostearate, Monoglycerides of Edible Fatty Acids, Choline Chloride, Potassium Sorbate (A Preservative), Minerals (Magnesium Oxide, Zinc Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Maganese Sulfate, Potassium Iodide and more).

Note though that wheat is included which is occasionally a trigger for allergies in a few dogs.

Greenies for Cats

Greenies are a corn based dental chew for cats, supplied in four flavors (beef, tuna, salmon or fish) so they are acceptable to our fussier feline friends.  Again they do need to be chewed up into small bits to be effective and ensure no large hard parts are swallowed.  If your cat is not a greedy or fast eater these can be a simple and proven way to improve their oral hygiene.

Greenies Considerations

Greenies for dogs are useful for maintaining good oral health in canines over 5 lbs in weight, and six months of age.  They should not be given to extremely small or young animals.

They are designed to be chewed up into small bits that are easy to swallow and digest.  The nature of these types of dental chews is that stay hard for some time (that is how they help remove plaque by abrasion when being chewed).  This is fine for those dogs that break them apart before swallowing, but if your pet is one of those that tries to swallow everything whole keep an eye on them, as these may not be the ideal way to deal with their oral hygiene needs.  Something like Proden Plaquoff that is sprinkled onto meals might be more suitable.

The chews are 96% digestible so only a tiny part is too hard to be absorbed by the gut.  For dogs that break them into smaller parts this is great.  Indeed a little roughage is great for anal gland health and worm prevention (as any advocate of the raw meaty bone diet will no doubt tell you).

Duralactin is a nutritional supplement based on a milk derivative.  It is proving a safe way to avoid using NSAIDs or steroids to deal with joint problems.  Based on milk protein from hyper-immunized cows, the active ingredient is MicroLactin®.

duralactinThis is being shown to reduce inflammation, no matter what the cause which is particularly useful in older animals as skeletal problems with inflammation in the joints brings pain and stiffness.  Early feedback is suggesting that animals treated with this supplement may do well enough to avoid the inevitable switch to stronger medications such as NSAIDs and steroids.

One of the key benefits of the drug is that it is all natural.  The other main reason for using it, is that it can have some great results and not cause gastro-intestinal issues associated with so many other anti-inflammatory products (though you should note that some cats may show an intolerance of milk based proteins so it may cause stomach upset for them, in which case you will need to stop the treatment).

Duralactin is used in the treatment of inflammation in horses, dogs and cats.  As it has no immunosuppressant ability is widely viewed as natural harmless alternative to painkillers.

Canine Duralactin

Duralactin for dogs is supplied as a chewy vanilla flavored tablet that hopefully your dog will accept as a well deserved treat.   The usual dosage is as follows:

Under 40 lbs – 1/2 tablet twice a day
40 to 80 lbs – 1 tablet twice a day
81 to 120 lbs – 1 1/2 tablets twice a day
Over 120 lbs  - 2 tablets twice a day

Results are usually seen within 4 to 7 days, with improvement continuing till around day 10 to 14.  Continued use of the supplement should maintain your pets improved condition.  For the best price canine Duralactin simply click the link above to view the entire range.

Feline Duralactin

Duraclactin for cats comes in three different types.

  1. You can chose a simple capsule to be opened and sprinkled onto food.
  2. There is a second combination product of Duralactin with Feline L-lysine.  This is supplied as a gel filled syringe and will be most useful for cats with inflammation and signs of the feline herpes virus (helping deal with respiratory and ocular associated problems).
  3. The final product in the range is a liquid formulation that includes additional Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.  These will help promote intestinal health as well as further aiding joint care.

Again signs of improvement should be seen within four to seven days, with peak condition reached within a fortnight.

Duralactin Equine

Equine Duralactin Joint Plus is supplied in butter flavored granules that you simply sprinkle onto your horse’s feed once or twice a day.  Again the benefits should display themselves quite quickly within a week, with peak results shown within a fortnight.

Duralactin

Duralactin is a novel approach to anti-inflammatory care of all types.  It is helping animals with soft tissue damage, and skeletal issues such as osteo-arthritis.  It is seen as natural, safe and a good alternative to long-term use of more serious medications.  Speak to your vet about whether it might help if you are having concerns about pain or inflammation for your pet.
