Using Glyco-Flex for Cats
Glyco-flex for felines come in two stages (GlycoFlex I and GlycoFlex II). Your vet will be best placed to suggest which one is better suited to the needs of your cat. Stage I is more of a preventative aid to maintaining healthy joints whilst Stage II has more active ingredients designed to help cats with more serious joint concerns.
Whichever you are using, it is usual to use a higher dose for an initial four to six week period. Then when symptoms have been shown to decrease a smaller maintenance dose can be followed as detailed below.
Glyco-Flex I
Each Stage I tablet contains 300g of GlycOmega Perna (Green Lipped Mussel) as its single active ingredient. This is harvested in New Zealand and tested to ensure consistent quality across the range. GlycOmega Perna contains a range of compounds, minerals and vitamins essential for good joint health. The building blocks of connective tissue (ligaments, tendons and cartilage) in the form of the full range of major glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) including Chondroitin Sulfates and Hyaluronic Acid.
The initial daily dosage needed is as follows:
- Cats from 1 to 8 lbs – 1 tablet
- Cats over 8 lbs – 2 tablets
The maintenance dose to be followed from 4 to 6 weeks is:
- Cats from 1 to 8 lbs – 1/2 tablet
- Cats over 8 lbs – 1 tablet
Glyco-Flex Stage I is supplied as a chewable tablet that most cats find tasty.
Glyco-Flex II
The Stage II formula is available in both chewable tablet form, or as a chicken liver flavored soft chew. As well as containing GlycOmega Perna (Green Lipped Mussel) additional anti-oxidents, vitamins and minerals are included with DMG, glucosamine, MSM and manganese. The aim is to make the active ingredients work more effectively in combination to really boost joint health and maintain mobility.
The initial 4 – 6 week daily dosage is as follow:
- 1 tablet or 2 chews to be given for every 10lbs of body weight.
The daily maintenance schedule is then reduced to:
- 1/2 a tablet, or 1 chew to be given for every 10lbs of body weight.
If more than one tablet or chew are needed daily, split them up between the morning and afternoon.
The Glycoflex range is natural and has been shown to be safe for pets, with no interaction with other medications noted. Of course when using any new treatments it is always a good idea to discuss them with your vet. They will have a better idea of which products are most likely to be effective, and whether they are duplicate other treatments already being used.
Glyco-Flex Range
As well as tablets and chews to help feline cats, Glyco-Flex is also supplied in a powder or granule formula to help horses, as well as tablet or soft chew form to help dogs. Glyco-Flex for cats is worth trying if you are concerned about mobility issues. Glycoflex II is the best choice for older animals with obvious signs of joint damage already evident.

Whilst most of us know that in theory regular brushing of our pets teeth would be a great idea, few of us manage the task. That’s why so many pet owners choose oral hygiene chews that help remove plaque and tartar in a way that is pleasant for both pet and owner.
Greenies Chews
Greenies come in various sizes dependant on the size of animal to be treated. It is important to buy the correct pack to allow your dog or cat to enjoy their treat safely and effectively.
Each chew is fairly low in calories, and only one per day is needed to keep oral health at its best. But like any additional tit-bit being given you should of course adjust the food intake to make room for these extra treats. Obesity in pets is a growing concern and one that is totally down to us, the owners to guard against if we want our pets to remain happy and healthy for the longest time possible.
Greenies for Dogs
Like CET Enzymotic dental chews, Greenies are chewy treats that use the action of chewing and natural abrasion to remove plaque and tartar from your pets teeth. Unlike CET chews they do not have an additional enzyme formula to help deal with bacteria and reduce future plaque build up though. But they do contain additional minerals and vitamins useful for all round good health and they are cheaper to buy.
The list of ingredients in canine Greenies is pretty long;
Gelatin, Wheat Protein Isolate, Glycerin, Soy Protein Isolate, Sodium Caseinate, Natural Poultry Flavor, Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate, Vegetable Oil (Preserved with Propyl Gallate), Sodium Tripolyphosphate, Lecithin, Ground Flaxseed, Calcium Carbonate, Magnesium Monostearate, Monoglycerides of Edible Fatty Acids, Choline Chloride, Potassium Sorbate (A Preservative), Minerals (Magnesium Oxide, Zinc Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Maganese Sulfate, Potassium Iodide and more).
Note though that wheat is included which is occasionally a trigger for allergies in a few dogs.
Greenies for Cats
Greenies are a corn based dental chew for cats, supplied in four flavors (beef, tuna, salmon or fish) so they are acceptable to our fussier feline friends. Again they do need to be chewed up into small bits to be effective and ensure no large hard parts are swallowed. If your cat is not a greedy or fast eater these can be a simple and proven way to improve their oral hygiene.
Greenies Considerations
Greenies for dogs are useful for maintaining good oral health in canines over 5 lbs in weight, and six months of age. They should not be given to extremely small or young animals.
They are designed to be chewed up into small bits that are easy to swallow and digest. The nature of these types of dental chews is that stay hard for some time (that is how they help remove plaque by abrasion when being chewed). This is fine for those dogs that break them apart before swallowing, but if your pet is one of those that tries to swallow everything whole keep an eye on them, as these may not be the ideal way to deal with their oral hygiene needs. Something like Proden Plaquoff that is sprinkled onto meals might be more suitable.
The chews are 96% digestible so only a tiny part is too hard to be absorbed by the gut. For dogs that break them into smaller parts this is great. Indeed a little roughage is great for anal gland health and worm prevention (as any advocate of the raw meaty bone diet will no doubt tell you).

Duralactin is a nutritional supplement based on a milk derivative. It is proving a safe way to avoid using NSAIDs or steroids to deal with joint problems. Based on milk protein from hyper-immunized cows, the active ingredient is MicroLactin®.
This is being shown to reduce inflammation, no matter what the cause which is particularly useful in older animals as skeletal problems with inflammation in the joints brings pain and stiffness. Early feedback is suggesting that animals treated with this supplement may do well enough to avoid the inevitable switch to stronger medications such as NSAIDs and steroids.
One of the key benefits of the drug is that it is all natural. The other main reason for using it, is that it can have some great results and not cause gastro-intestinal issues associated with so many other anti-inflammatory products (though you should note that some cats may show an intolerance of milk based proteins so it may cause stomach upset for them, in which case you will need to stop the treatment).
Duralactin is used in the treatment of inflammation in horses, dogs and cats. As it has no immunosuppressant ability is widely viewed as natural harmless alternative to painkillers.
Canine Duralactin

Feline Duralactin
Duraclactin for cats comes in three different types.

- The final product in the range is a liquid formulation that includes additional Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. These will help promote intestinal health as well as further aiding joint care.
Again signs of improvement should be seen within four to seven days, with peak condition reached within a fortnight.
Duralactin Equine
Equine Duralactin Joint Plus is supplied in butter flavored granules that you simply sprinkle onto your horse’s feed once or twice a day. Again the benefits should display themselves quite quickly within a week, with peak results shown within a fortnight.
Duralactin
Duralactin is a novel approach to anti-inflammatory care of all types. It is helping animals with soft tissue damage, and skeletal issues such as osteo-arthritis. It is seen as natural, safe and a good alternative to long-term use of more serious medications. Speak to your vet about whether it might help if you are having concerns about pain or inflammation for your pet.
