Pronyl Plus

Rather confusingly, our second generic Frontline Plus product is also produced by Sergeant’s.  This time it is called Pronyl Plus.  And, you can check out the even better prices on this one here.

Pronyl Plus was released a little later than Fiproguard Plus, and both are pretty much interchangeable.

The big question then is which product do you buy?  Well, to be perfectly honest, as far as your pet is concerned it makes no difference at all.  Both generic Frontline Plus products, and the original have the same volume and quality of the key active ingredients.  So the results of using any one of them will be the same.

The reasoning behind the somewhat confusing decision to produce not one, but two generic flea treatments, is that they are targetting a slightly different audience, being sold in different types of stores.

You will usually see Fiproguard Plus in specialist pet supply stores whereas Pronyl Plus will be a more mass market product stocked in large grocery stores, drug stores and multi site retailers.  Perhaps this is why, for their launch we are seeing Pronyl Plus being offered at special offer prices around 40% less than the Fiproguard Plus!

Whilst discounts are being offered we strongly suggest choosing the generic Frontline Plus products.  After all they offer the same protection against biting insects, yet are surprisingly light on your pocket.  In the past we have been wary of generic Frontline Plus products since they simply haven’t offered a significant saving over the branded original.  But it now looks like Seargant’s are trying very hard to create a generic version of Frontline Plus that offers enough of a cost saving to make it an attractive purchase.

Feline Heartgard Chewables

Feline Heartgard are a chewable beef flavored tablet.  They are supplied in two dose sizes which are color coded for convenience.  The purple pack is for larger cats from 5 to 15lbs and contains 165mcg of ivermectin.  The red pack is for smaller cats weighing under 5lbs and contains 55mcg of ivermectin.

Heargard is safe to use on cats from six weeks of age.  Side effects are extremely rare when ivermectin is used in these low doses.  Higher dosages can cause adverse reactions such as loss of appetite, tremors, dilated pupils, blindness and confusion so always check you give the correct dose at the right time for your cat.

At this time, since feline Heartgard is still one of the newer heartworm preventatives there is no generic version available.

How Feline Heartgard Prevents Heartworm Disease

The tiny dose of ivermectin included in Heartgard chewables is absorbed into the blood stream.  Here it safely destroys any juvenile heartworm larvae that have infected the animal via a mosquito bite during the previous month.  Used every 30 days this will ensure that no heartworms remain in the system for longer than a month, and so prevents any from maturing into their dangerous adult form.

Using Heartgard for Cats

The only way to be sure that heartworm disease is prevented is to use a registered preventative such as Heartgard Chewables, Advantage Multi or Revolution for cats each and every month.  If only seasonal use is followed you may need to have an annual test for the parasite before beginning each years treatment.  Only one preventative should ever be used at one time.

If you wish to switch feline heartworm medicines just use the first Heartgard chewable tablet 30 days after you last used the other product.

Kittens under two months should be able to be given preventatives without needing a test for the condition first, but older cats that have not been on a preventative course will need to be tested by your vet before you begin using this or any other feline heartworm medication.

This formula is aimed at only certain types of urinary incontinence.  If your dog or cat’s problems are old-age or fear based, or following being spayed or neutered the product could be of great help.  For other forms of incontinence you may need a veterinary prescribed medication instead.  These tend to come with more chance of side effects so opting for a natural formula when suitable is recommended.  Leaks No More is designed to help strengthen the sphincter muscles that control urination.

Each of the five active ingredients targets a particular cause of the problem:

1. Old age related incontinence is dealt with by Alumina (oxide of aluminum).
2. To tackle frequent urination in small quantities Cantaris (Spanish fly) is included.
3. Incontinence that is caused by excitement, occurs as the animal falls asleep or has begun following surgery is tackled with Causticum.
4. For relatively large volumes of clear watery urine often associated with fear, Gelsemium Sempervirens (yellow jasmine) is included.
5. To deal with pets that leak during sleep Plantago Major (plantain) is added to the formula.

The makers suggest that the product may help animals that are experiencing incontinence due to other causes too, but in general the ingredients are only really designed to help with tightening the sphincter muscle that controls flow.  This tends to lose strength following surgery and as the animal ages.

Using Homeopet Leaks No More

The makers suggest that the best way to give this remedy is to place the drops directly into the mouth of your pet, so that it is absorbed quickly into the mucus membrane.   We have had great success with using  the drops in a far easier way.  Adding to a small bowl of milk is a much easier way to ensure the pet is not stressed and still gets their daily dose.

Again this is one of those medications where an initial relatively high dose is needed.  Then when improvements are seen you can reduce the dosage to a maintenance level.  In fact, if you do not reduce the dose you can see symptoms return.

The initial dosage (to be given three times a day) is as follows:

• animals from 1 to 20lbs – 5 drops
• animals from 21 to 60 lbs – 10 drops
• animals from 61 to 100 lbs – 15 drops
• animals 100 lbs – 20 drops
• animals weighing less than 1 lb should have 2 drops added to their drinking water each day.

Once a beneficial reaction is seen the frequency of dosing should be reduced to twice and eventually once daily.  If an improvement in condition is not followed by a reduction in the dosage a return of the symptoms may follow overuse of the drops.  This can be alleviated by stopping treatment for three days and then starting again.

Cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets, hamsters and pot-bellied pigs can all be successfully treated using the dosing guide above.  Smaller animals such as mice, budgies and guinea pigs may all be treated with drops added to their water, read the pack instructions for full guidelines.

If you are adding the drops to food or water you may find the animal does not like the alcohol smell (this is used as a preservative).  You can try adding to milk instead or simply allow the alcohol odor to dissipate for 20 minutes before presenting the food or water to your pet.

Considerations

The product itself has not been shown to have any side effects or interactions with other medications.  Some animals are sensitive to homeopathic preparations.  These will show with one dose.  So give Leaks No More only one time on the first day so that you can spot any sensitivity and cease further treatment.  This type of sensitivity is to homeopathic remedies in general, and very rare in animals or humans.

Using Glyco-Flex for Cats

Glyco-flex for felines come in two stages (GlycoFlex I and GlycoFlex II).  Your vet will be best placed to suggest which one is better suited to the needs of your cat.  Stage I is more of a preventative aid to maintaining healthy joints whilst Stage II has more active ingredients designed to help cats with more serious joint concerns.

Whichever you are using, it is usual to use a higher dose for an initial four to six week period.  Then when symptoms have been shown to decrease a smaller maintenance dose can be followed as detailed below.

Glyco-Flex I

Each Stage I tablet contains 300g of GlycOmega Perna (Green Lipped Mussel) as its single active ingredient.  This is harvested in New Zealand and tested to ensure consistent quality across the range.  GlycOmega Perna contains a range of compounds, minerals and vitamins essential for good joint health.  The building blocks of connective tissue (ligaments, tendons and cartilage) in the form of the full range of major glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) including Chondroitin Sulfates and Hyaluronic Acid.

The initial daily dosage needed is as follows:

• Cats from 1 to 8 lbs – 1 tablet
• Cats over 8 lbs – 2 tablets

The maintenance dose to be followed from 4 to 6 weeks is:

The initial 4 – 6 week daily dosage is as follow:

• 1 tablet or 2 chews to be given for every 10lbs of body weight.

The daily maintenance schedule is then reduced to:

• 1/2 a tablet, or 1 chew to be given for every 10lbs of body weight.

If more than one tablet or chew are needed daily, split them up between the morning and afternoon.

Greenies come in various sizes dependant on the size of animal to be treated.  It is important to buy the correct pack to allow your dog or cat to enjoy their treat safely and effectively.

Each chew is fairly low in calories, and only one per day is needed to keep oral health at its best.  But like any additional tit-bit being given you should of course adjust the food intake to make room for these extra treats.  Obesity in pets is a growing concern and one that is totally down to us, the owners to guard against if we want our pets to remain happy and healthy for the longest time possible.

Greenies for Dogs

Like CET Enzymotic dental chews, Greenies are chewy treats that use the action of chewing and natural abrasion to remove plaque and tartar from your pets teeth.  Unlike CET chews they do not have an additional enzyme formula to help deal with bacteria and reduce future plaque build up though.  But they do contain additional minerals and vitamins useful for all round good health and they are cheaper to buy.

The list of ingredients in canine Greenies is pretty long;

Note though that wheat is included which is occasionally a trigger for allergies in a few dogs.

Greenies for Cats

Greenies are a corn based dental chew for cats, supplied in four flavors (beef, tuna, salmon or fish) so they are acceptable to our fussier feline friends.  Again they do need to be chewed up into small bits to be effective and ensure no large hard parts are swallowed.  If your cat is not a greedy or fast eater these can be a simple and proven way to improve their oral hygiene.

Greenies Considerations

Greenies for dogs are useful for maintaining good oral health in canines over 5 lbs in weight, and six months of age.  They should not be given to extremely small or young animals.

They are designed to be chewed up into small bits that are easy to swallow and digest.  The nature of these types of dental chews is that stay hard for some time (that is how they help remove plaque by abrasion when being chewed).  This is fine for those dogs that break them apart before swallowing, but if your pet is one of those that tries to swallow everything whole keep an eye on them, as these may not be the ideal way to deal with their oral hygiene needs.  Something like Proden Plaquoff that is sprinkled onto meals might be more suitable.

The chews are 96% digestible so only a tiny part is too hard to be absorbed by the gut.  For dogs that break them into smaller parts this is great.  Indeed a little roughage is great for anal gland health and worm prevention (as any advocate of the raw meaty bone diet will no doubt tell you).
