Using Glyco-Flex for Horses

You will need to determine first, which stage of this joint supplement is required.  Stage I is for younger animals that have a need for early joint support, particularly sporting or working animals.   Stage II with its more complete formula is suited to animals with a more urgent need for joint support, whether due to activity levels, injury, operative procedures or age.  It is most often used for elderly horses as well as sporting and working animals.

Whichever product you need to use there is a choice of buying in either pellet or powder form to ensure that giving your horse their supplements is as easy as possible.

Both are used in a similar way, with a scoop provided to make measuring the correct dose (14g of powder or 21g of pellets) simple.  Initially a four to six week period is suggested when a slightly higher dose will be required.  Once signs of improvement are apparent, a reduced maintenance level can be achieved.

The initial treatment should be three scoops given twice a day.   The maintenance dosage is reduced to one scoop twice daily.  Horses weighing more than 1200lbs should have an additional scoop per day.  It is best to divide the treatment equally between morning and evening as indicated.

Glyco-Flex EQ

This is the less powerful formulation most useful for treating animals with an early need for joint support, such as young working animals.  The key active ingredient is 4300mg of GlycOmega Perna (Green Lipped Mussel) per scoop.  This natural substance contains 57 nutrients useful for maintaining healthy joints and connective tissue.

Glyco-Flex II EQ

This is probably the most popular formulation since the addition of glucosamine, MSM and manganese make the product more powerful and able to really help animals with a more pressing need for joint support.  Used often both before and after surgery this provides everything the animal needs to ensure ligaments, tendons, cartilage and synovial fluid are maintained to a higher level.

In turn this reduces soreness, stiffness, lameness and generally keeps your animal mobile.  You cannot really cure serious issues such as arthritis, but you can help the animals own body fight back to some degree.  There may be cases when such an equine joint supplement as this or Cosequin equine powder may not be seen as that beneficial.  But there are many more cases where owners see a distinct improvement in mobility, activity and subsequently general mood and well-being, so they are certainly worth try or discussing with your vet if you are concerned about your horses joint health.

The Glyco-Flex Range

Using Glyco-Flex for Cats

Glyco-flex for felines come in two stages (GlycoFlex I and GlycoFlex II).  Your vet will be best placed to suggest which one is better suited to the needs of your cat.  Stage I is more of a preventative aid to maintaining healthy joints whilst Stage II has more active ingredients designed to help cats with more serious joint concerns.

Whichever you are using, it is usual to use a higher dose for an initial four to six week period.  Then when symptoms have been shown to decrease a smaller maintenance dose can be followed as detailed below.

Glyco-Flex I

Each Stage I tablet contains 300g of GlycOmega Perna (Green Lipped Mussel) as its single active ingredient.  This is harvested in New Zealand and tested to ensure consistent quality across the range.  GlycOmega Perna contains a range of compounds, minerals and vitamins essential for good joint health.  The building blocks of connective tissue (ligaments, tendons and cartilage) in the form of the full range of major glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) including Chondroitin Sulfates and Hyaluronic Acid.

The initial daily dosage needed is as follows:

  • Cats from 1 to 8 lbs – 1 tablet
  • Cats over 8 lbs – 2 tablets

The maintenance dose to be followed from 4 to 6 weeks is:

  • Cats from 1 to 8 lbs – 1/2 tablet
  • Cats over 8 lbs – 1 tablet

Glyco-Flex Stage I is supplied as a chewable tablet that most cats find tasty.

Glyco-Flex II

The Stage II formula is available in both chewable tablet form, or as a chicken liver flavored soft chew.  As well as containing GlycOmega Perna (Green Lipped Mussel) additional anti-oxidents, vitamins and minerals are included with DMG, glucosamine, MSM and manganese.  The aim is to make the active ingredients work more effectively in combination to really boost joint health and maintain mobility.

The initial 4 – 6 week daily dosage is as follow:

  • 1 tablet or 2 chews to be given for every 10lbs of body weight.

The daily maintenance schedule is then reduced to:

  • 1/2 a tablet, or 1 chew to be given for every 10lbs of body weight.

If more than one tablet or chew are needed daily, split them up between the morning and afternoon.

The Glycoflex range is natural and has been shown to be safe for pets, with no interaction with other medications noted.  Of course when using any new treatments it is always a good idea to discuss them with your vet.  They will have a better idea of which products are most likely to be effective, and whether they are duplicate other treatments already being used.

Glyco-Flex Range

As well as tablets and chews to help feline cats, Glyco-Flex is also supplied in a powder or granule formula to help horses, as well as tablet or soft chew form to help dogs.  Glyco-Flex for cats is worth trying if you are concerned about mobility issues.  Glycoflex II is the best choice for older animals with obvious signs of joint damage already evident.

Glyco-Flex Soft Chews for Dogs

Glyco-Flex Soft Chews for dogs are a range of glucosamine based supplements intended to promote joint health and mobility. Available as a three stage system, your vet should recommend the correct stage (I, II or III) depending on the severity of any joint problems, age and type of dog to be treated.

Using Canine Glyco-Flex Chews

glyco-flex canineIt is always difficult to know just how effective some treatments are for joint problems in dogs.  Without them telling us, we have to watch closely to determine the causes of problems and the improvement caused by supplements.  Your vet will be in the best position to guage how suitable such products as Glyco-Flex of Phycox Soft Chews are likely to be.

As with many similar products it is usual to give a higher dosage initially for between four to six weeks.  Then when signs of stiffness are alleviated a lower maintenance dose is possible.   The number of chews given depends on the weight of your dog.  When more than one chew is required each day it is more effective to split the dosage in half, giving part in the morning, and then another in the evening.

The initial daily dosage is as follows:

  • Dogs up to 30 lbs – 1 chew
  • Dogs from 31 to 60 lbs – 2 chews
  • Dogs from 61 to 100 lbs – 4 chews
  • Dogs over 100 lbs – 5 chews

The maintance daily dose is:

  • Dogs up to 30 lbs – 1 chew every other day
  • Dogs from 31 to 60 lbs – 1 chew
  • Dogs from 61 to 100 lbs – 2 chews
  • Dogs over 100 lbs – 3 chews

The chews are chicken liver flavor so should be seen as a real treat by most dogs and not be difficult to ensure they take.

Glyco-Flex Canine – 3 Stage System

As a general guide Glyco-Flex I is the weakest formula, and III is the strongest.  You should get advice from your vet about which is the right formulation for your pet’s particular needs.

Stage I is indicated for puppies and dogs with an early need for some basic form of skeletal support.  This is most likely to be the case for those breeds that we know are likely to develop conditions such as hip dysplasia or osteoarthritis as they age.  The active ingredients included in each Glyco-flex I chew are:

  • Perna Canaliculus (GlycOmega brand Green Lipped Mussel)  – 300 mg
  • Glucosamine HCI (Shrimp and Crab)  – 250 mg
  • N,N-Dimethylglycine HCl (DMG)  – 50 mg

Stage II is indicated for dogs with a more moderate need for joint support.  These may be working or sporting animals, breeds with a predisposition for joint problems and following orthopedic surgery.  The active ingredients in each Glyco-flex II chew are:

  • Glucosamine HCI (Shrimp and Crab)  – 375 mg
  • Perna Canaliculus (GlycOmega brand Green Lipped Mussel)  – 300 mg
  • Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)  – 250 mg
  • N,N-Dimethylglycine HCl (DMG)  – 50 mg
  • Manganese  (as Mn Proteinate) –   5 mg

Stage III is used more usually in elderly or working dogs with a more pressing need for joint support due to injury, osteoarthritis or following orthopedic surgery.  The active ingredients in each Glyco-flex III soft chew are as follows:

  • Glucosamine HCI (Shrimp and Crab)  – 500 mg
  • Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)  – 500 mg
  • Perna Canaliculus (GlycOmega brand Green Lipped Mussel)  – 300 mg
  • N,N-Dimethylglycine HCl (DMG)  – 50 mg
  • Manganese  (as Mn Proteinate) –   5 mg
  • dl-alpha Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E) – 25 IU
  • Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) – 12 mg
  • Grape Seed Extract  – 2.5 mg

  • Selenium (as Sodium Selenite)  0.001 mg

Canine Glyco-Flex to Support Joint Health

The range of amino acids, fatty acids, glucosamine, vitamins and minerals have been developed by Vetri-Science to help improve overall joint health.  The building blocks of cartilage itself are included, along with essential minerals to help promote connective tissue growth.  Minerals to promote strong bones and increase the enzyme production that actually helps joints thrive are all believed to be beneficial in improving mobility and reducing stiffness in the joints.

Glyco-Flex Range

The Glyco-Flex range includes the three stage system using either tablets and chews for dogs, a two stage system using either chewable tablets or bite sized chews for cats and a two stage system using powder or pellets for horses.  Glyco-Flex soft chews for dogs are the most popular product in the range as they can ward off joint problems in canines we suspect will suffer problems in the future.
